LDAP Integration

Postby TroyP » May 21st, 2013, 6:45 pm

We have set up LDAP integration, but LDAP defaults to guest access. We have a large number of teachers and would prefer not to create accounts for them in TODCM. We also would like to allow parents to view the curriculum, but not the resources. Teachers - resources, Parents - NO resources.

We would like to allow all of our teachers to authenticate using their LDAP credentials and then be identified as a non-editing teacher.
We would also like to allow guest access for parents (without seeing resources).

Is this possible?

I don't see a problem here as long as you have the parents' accounts and teachers' accounts set up properly in TODCM. You have to tag the resources private (we can even make them private by default) to hide them; all resources can be configured to allowing public/private tagging, some of the resources in the default template are not configured yet.

TODCM is very flexible and it can pretty much do anything as long as it is "customized properly". I remember your school district had initiated a dialog with us; think I even gave a demo and a quote too, but your school chose to perform the implementation yourselves and you will run into issues that we would not able to help through the forums here...

Thanks for the response. We did investigate having you do some of the configuration, but, quite frankly have been hit with budget reductions. We do believe in supporting open source projects financially when we can. Unfortunately, we can't provide support at the level that we would like to. Maybe we'll be able to work something out in the future.

I'm not sure that I was clear in my original question. As I understand it, it seems as though LDAP integration only leads to guest accounts. Thus, we don't have parent accounts and teacher accounts (with the few exceptions of editors). This would mean that private/public issue wouldn't work.

Maybe I'm missing something fundamental.

Thanks for the reply.

It sounds to me you are expecting teachers to login without having their accounts in TODCM. You have to add the teacher accounts to TODCM through the user management interface before the teachers can login as "teachers". A LDAP integration/plugin that can distinguish different access levels is complex and other open source projects just add the users from LDAP regardless of the user access level.

I am in the process of adding a new feature that would add the teacher accounts properly without having the administrator adding the accounts manually.
